September - Quick Update

The days are noticably shortening and the sounds of the machinery needed for the potato harvest echo through Wyck. The scent of bonfires fills the air today despite the warmth of the sun as we look towards Autumn.

Garden Visit - Wheatley House, Hampshire

Wheatley House is situated between Binsted and Kingsley in north Hampshire and will be opening it's gates for the National Gardens Scheme on Saturday and Sunday 16,17 August between 1:30 and 5:30. I got a behind-the-scenes look yesterday!

RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show

Monday was Press Day for Hampton Court Palace Flower Show and the sun shone on all setting up. The show gardens were finished, prizes were being announced that afternoon and it was great to be allowed in for an advance view!

The True Meaning of Friendship

I realise it is an odd decision as a garden designer and writer to not talk about Chelsea Flower Show but my month has been overshadowed by the death of my dear friend Jennifer Landers early in May. Jennifer taught me many things about friendship in the nearly thirty years we knew each other and I miss her every day. To realise how much she was loved and respected at work and within her huge circle of friends, colleagues, family and neighbours gives those who knew her well a huge sense of joy. Jennifer was a truly loyal person who stood up for what she believed in. We were blessed to have been able to call her our friend.

Greenwich, The Crystal and the Society of Garden Designers Spring Conference

I was going to write all about the Society of Garden Designers Conference which was held this past Saturday in London. The speakers was interesting, informative, enthusiastic and intelligent. It was in my opinion, the best conference I have attended so far. Speakers Dan Hinkley, Sarah Eberle, James Wong and Made Wijaya work around the world and have been influenced and inspired by different sources. The theme 'Exotic' made people think it would be about planting in foreign lands but the Oxford Dictionary definition of Exotic as 'attractive or striking because colourful or out of the ordinary'or 'of a kind not ordinarily encountered, specially produced' may be more appropriate in this context. I left there inspired and excited, and headed to the O2.

Bank Holidays & the Garden at Wyck Farmhouse

The end of the school holidays looms after today and my children, who have spent an uneventful few weeks revising for exams, will go back to their schools tomorrow. This weekend though was all about friends, gardening, food and family.
